    Annas Mix 21:

    (28 min, mostly upbeat)

I don’t really like this one. It was originally longer and I cut 3 songs because it was all over the place but it still feels a bit incohesive. I think it’s from the time I was around 17/18 and had to move back to my mother’s place because of a catastrophic failed shared flat situation with my best friend back then. Not a good time.

(32 min, mostly upbeat)

From when I was 18. It’s getting hard to remember from when each mix is but I know that the Avalanches album Wildflower was freshly out so it must’ve been then. I remember that I had just met who would become my best friend for many years through an event my first boyfriend brought me to and Wildflower was the first of a lot really great music she recommended to me. I have never met anyone before or since with a music taste as good or as compatible with mine as hers. Also I had just started going to Metalab because I remember discovering that last song at the old lounge there.

(36 min, cute and pretty)

A lot of cute stuff but also a few songs I now cringe at a bit. I am ashamed to admit I, as a teen, have seen the Lumineers live, not once but twice!! But my soon to be best friend back then showed Flight of the Conchords to me for the first time and I was immediately a die hard fan. Such a great show and great music. Carol Brown is such a sweet beautiful song. Probably my favorite.

    Annas Mix 25:

(31 min, heartbroken but not exclusively sad, only female singers)

One of my favorite mixes I ever made. I had broken up with my boyfriend a couple of months earlier but was already heartbroken over another unrequited crush. I had just discovered Bojack Horseman and through that Courtney Barnett. Also one of my all time favorite songs that I identify with sooo strongly had just come out and blew my mind. Sweet Sound of Ignorance.
When it first came out I was already feeling like shit, so it got me especially hard. I listened to it on repeat for a long time and cried so so much.

  • Ranking of my favorite (“serious”) actresses + choosing favorite performances of theirs

First: yes, I am in love with most of them but they are also incredibly talented and I love a lot of the movies they starred in.
I have watched a lot of movies just because Kirsten Dunst or Christina Ricci starred in them and I honestly rarely get disappointed choosing movies to watch that way.
I had to make the distinction of them being “serious” actresses because if I had included all my favorite comedic actresses the list would be even longer. So look forward to a sequel tomorrow.

    1. Kirsten Dunst (The Virgin Suicides, Melancholia)
    2. Christina Ricci (Buffalo ’66, Addams Family)
    3. Jodie Foster (Silence of the Lambs, Nell)
    4. Winona Ryder (Night on Earth, Heathers)
    5. Evan Rachel Wood (Kajillionaire, Pretty Persuasion)
    6. Melanie Lynskey (Heavenly Creatures, I don’t feel at home in this World anymore)

From when I was 18. I think this wasn’t originally no. 17. At some point in the last 10 year I wanted all my numbered mixes to be somewhat good, so I reworked some and replaced others.
I had completely forgotten about this one. I have most of my mixes also as playlists in my music library on my computer but this one was lost for some reason. But luckily I still found the physical CD somewhere. Now I have it again. \o/

This is so beautiful!! I’ve been listening to a lot of these old mixes again for the first time in a while writing them down for these posts and different mixes give me different reactions. Sometimes I cringe a bit, often I feel really sorry for the younger versions of myself because of how deeply unhappy and hopeless I was back then.
When I listen to this one I am just filled with love and admiration for teenie Anna.

    (54 min, mostly sad)

From when I was 16. I made this one really fast without much thought because I was having a really really bad day and just needed to take a drive and listen to music that resonated with how I was feeling. So I quickly put some stuff on there and burned a CD for the drive. I don’t remember who drove me. Either my mom or one of the caregivers in the group home.

Btw I will defend those two songs Robert Pattinson recorded for the first Twilight Soundtrack till the day I die. I know people meme on them and he’s most likely ashamed of them, because they were all removed from streaming but I still love them!

    (52 min, only rap)

I made this one specifically for my sister when I was 17/18. I don’t remember why. Probably because we were doing a road trip or something and I wanted to have a mix prepared that she would for sure enjoy. She’s almost 10 years older than me and I grew up listening to a lot of rap because that’s what she was listening to.

    Music:

    “Girlfriend” by Grace Ives (2026)

I got into her because she played at this years Primavera Sound. I had never heard of her and I am now a big fan. Girlfriend is her newest album, released in 2026. I think her 2nd album Janky Star from 2022 is her best but this ones a close 2nd. It’s Pop which I don’t always like but her stuff just sounds really good to me and the lyrics are very relatable. If you like Chappell Roan or Lorde you might like her too.
My favs from Girlfriend are “Avanlanche”, “Dance with me” and “Trouble”.

“The World Is Not Good Enough” by Sean Solomon (2026)

Another artist I’ve just recently discovered. Apparently he’s part of multiple bands, but I had never heard of any of them.
The album is kind of indie folk with a lo-fi vibe. Both the general vibes and the lyrics are quite depressing and emo, which I love.
Also he said that one of his influences is Elliott Smith which always gets bonus points from me.
If you like melancholic indie stuff like Neutral Milk Hotel or Sufjan Stevens you might like his album.
My favorite songs are “Car crash”, “Overdose” and “Remember”.

    Film:

“The Drama” by Kristoffer Borgli (2026)

This movie was sooo good. Mild spoilers ahead (but only stuff you find out like 15-20 min into the movie)
It’s about an engaged couple played by Robert Pattinson and Zendaya who, shortly before their wedding, hang out with a couple they are friends with and one of the friends want to play a game where everyone tells one really bad secret. When it’s Zendaya’s characters turn she reveals that she was a really alienated, angry teenager (relatable!) and that when she was in high school she planned to do a mass shooting but then didn’t end up going through with it. The friends and her fiance are really disturbed by the revelation and it completely changes their dynamic and makes him question their relationship during the time right before their wedding.
Both the acting and the script are really good. 9/10!

    Show:

    D.T.F. St. Louis (2026)

It stars almost exclusively actors I love from other shows or movies. Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), David Harbor (West End Girl lol), Linda Cardellini (Freaks and Geeks), Richard Jenkins (Six Feet Under) and, in a small-ish role Peter Sarsgard (Garden State).
The setting is that two straight married guys (Bateman and Harbor) start a really close friendship and one of them ends up dead. The death is being investigated by two detectives (one of them played by Jenkins). But that’s just the setting. The whole murder mystery set-up is really captivating but the show, at its core isn’t really about that in my opinion. It’s about how precious and important friendship can be, how lonely and desperate most people are deep down and how everything (people, relationships) isn’t as it seems when you judge it at first glance. The writing is soooo fucking good. It’s the best show I have seen in years and I watch a lot of TV. It is so good in fact that I watched it 2 and a half times within a couple of weeks after discovering it (shout-out to my friend Anna who recommended it) and honestly I could watch it a third time right now if someone asked me to. That’s how much I love it!! It both broke and healed me at the same time and it made me realize how much I crave the kind of love the two friends have with each other. I don’t remember ever having such a beautiful intimate friendship or relationship in general. 11/10

    Book(s):

    Famesick by Lena Dunham (2026)

This is Lena Dunhams 2nd memoir and I’ve read both. This one is far superior to the first one. I read a lot memoirs written by famous women. In fact it might be my favorite genre of books. I feel like I gain a lot of knowledge from reading them and I feel connected and less alone when I read about how complex and, a lot of the time, fucked up even people that I admire are.
This book is about letting yourself be treated like shit because you don’t value yourself both in relationships and at work, about how difficult it is to be a woman in the industry, how it feels to be chronically ill but forcing yourself to act and work like you aren’t. How the expectations are to work until you can’t anymore and how being a person, especially a woman in the public eye leads to being sucked dry of all your energy and scrutinized until you feel completely unlovable.
I laughed and cried and related a lot. And I gained a lot of admiration for Lena Dunham. I wasn’t always a fan and it’s easy to judge her for all the controversies she had. But I honestly can’t imagine many people not liking her after reading this.
It’s so funny and honest and incredibly well written. 10/10

The Make-Believe by Hannah Murray (2026)

Another memoir by a famous woman. My favorite!
This one is written by Hannah Murray who played my favorite character in one of my favorite shows from when I was a teen: Skins. I didn’t really follow her career after that. Apparently she also played Gilly in Game of Thrones (which I never watched beyond S1 because I was so put off by all the rape scenes).
The book is specifically about how she was lulled into joining an esoteric wellness cult in her 20s and about her having a psychotic break due to undiagnosed bipolar disorder.
I’ve read multiple books by people who suffer from severe mental illness but her account of how it felt/feels to be bipolar and have psychotic delusions were really especially interesting to me. I’ve never heard such an honest unfiltered account about what can happen in your brain during psychosis. I feel like I gained a new sense of empathy for people who are bipolar and/or psychotic through reading this book.
Also the whole esoteric energy healing cult thing is really interesting. My whole family is very esoteric and I always want to stay away as far as possible from all of it. Her experiences only solidified my opinion on people who present themselves as gurus trying to sell you healing and enlightenment.
Really really interesting and well written. 9.5/10

    Stand-Up:

    Robby Hoffman: Wake Up (2025)

This was released very late into 2025 and it’s the second comedy special of Robby Hoffman, who you might have seen on Hacks or Rooster. She’s also married to a former Bachelorette Gaby Windey.
It’s really rare and special these days for someone to create a new comedy special that feels entirely original and not at all obnoxious or politically incorrect just for the sake of screaming how the woke left will never be able to cancel you.
Robby Hoffman’s humor is quite edgy but in such a refreshing way that I really enjoyed it. A lot of the jokes are about growing up poor, being gay and genderqueer and about the queer community. She also pokes a lot of fun at straight people.
She’s not trying to be sensitive AT ALL. In fact she’s a bit of an asshole but most great comedians are in my opinion.
Would not recommend for people who are overly sensitive when it comes to humor or who don’t enjoy some edginess.
I watched it twice already and will probably watch it again. 9/10

Very beautiful mix. I made this at age 15. I had just moved out of my mom’s place and I listened to it for the first while she was driving me home after visiting her. I was unhappily in love back then, my first really really hard infatuation with someone and I was also having lots of difficulties with my family.

    Annas Mix 13:

    (39 min, melancholic/sad)

I made this mix when I was 15 because my best friend at the time was feeling sad and I asked one of the social workers in our group home to take us for a ride so we could listen to it hoping it would cheer my friend up. I had just exchanged music collections with another caregiver and started listening to a lot of indie stuff she had shared with me like Bombay Bicycle Club, Cat Power and City & Colour. Tbh I stopped listening to a lot of the music on here.
I still enjoy the first half though.

Annas Mix 14:

(33 min, yearning, a bit melancholic)

This was originally twice as long and I cut it down to this at some point. I remember forgetting the CD in one of the cars our group home shared and one of the caregivers listened to it and complimented my taste in music. As a very mature “old soul” teen (*cough* autistic) validation from adults or older teens meant everything to me. Btw I grew to love the last song “Green Eyes” because it was one that that one social worker (that I bonded over exchanging music collections) would always sing and play on her guitar for me.

“He Can Only Hold her” by Amy Winehouse

    “Green Eyes” by Coldplay

    Annas Mix 15:

    (26 min, mostly folky stuff)

From when I was 15. I had just started smoking cigarettes and wasn’t allowed to openly smoke in my group home yet (if you got caught smoking under the age of 16 you’d lose a couple Euros of your pocket money) because I wasn’t old enough. So I would take long walks through our village listening to this and smoking one cigarette after the other.

  • My all time favorite SNL cast members

I was a very avid fan of Saturday Night Live when I was a teen. At some point (around Season 40 I think) I stopped watching because most of my favorite cast members had left and I couldn’t really get into the new generation.
Last year I started catching up again and am now up to the date on the last few seasons (S48/49 – S51 I think).
I also over time have watched a lot of random sketches from the 90s but very little from the 70s and 80s. So I have a lot of gaps in my knowledge and I think it’s probably pretty obvious which seasons I grew up on and therefore prefer over the other eras by the cast member I love most.

“Too much on my Mind” really spoke to me at that time. It’s one of the few songs I put on more than one Mix.

Not one of my favourites. It’s not bad but there wasn’t a lot of thought put into it.

I think during this time I was really enthusiastic about making lots of mixes all the time but wasn’t close to as perfectionist as I am now with the composition of mixes. I just put on a bunch of songs I liked on a playlist and burned it on CD.

  • Archive of all the numbered Mix CDs/playlists I ever made (Part 1 of many)

I have compiled Mix CDs for most of my life at this point and they mean a lot to me. As a teen I wasn’t (and am often still not) very good at sharing my feelings and making mix CDs was a way for me to connect to my mom and show her how I felt and what was important to me.

I am scared that one day the CDs will get scratched or lost and that I will somehow lose the record of these mixes and forget when and why I made them.

So I wanna list all of the important details about all of them here so that the information is safe forever.

    Annas Mix 1:

    (27 min, upbeat happy mood)

I reworked this one multiple times. The first version had almost none of the same songs. I started making my numbered mixes when I was about 12, so the reworked version is probably from when I was 13-14. It’s mostly older music I found through movies and TV shows. My mom really enjoyed this one because it’s not as depressing as most of my other mixes and she loves Janis Joplin.

    “It’s Alright, Baby” by Komeda
    “Soul Kitchen” by The Doors

“I’m A Believer” by the Monkees

“The Joker” by Steve Miller Band
    “It’s Alright” by The Impressions

“Surfin’ U.S.A” by The Beach Boys
“Me and Bobby McGee” Janis Joplin
“Stranger in a Strange World” by Leon Russel

Annas Mix 2:

(36 min, as depressing as it gets)

Also a reworked one from when I was about 14. I made this for really bad days.

I wouldn’t leave my house/room at the time for any reason (also refusing to go to school) and would spend most of every day by myself. My mom would often drive me around for 30-40 min and we would listen to these mixes, so I at least would get out of the house for a little while that way.

“Needle in the Hay” by Elliott Smith

“No Name #1” by Elliott Smith

“Between the Bars” by Elliott Smith

    “2:45 a.m.” by Elliott Smith

“Like a Monkey in a Zoo” by Daniel Johnston

“I’ve been alone too long” by Soko

“A Minor Incident” by Badly Drawn Boy

“Trouble”(Cat Stevens Cover) by Elliott Smith

“Voice from the Mountain” by Nick Drake

“Eleventeen” by Kimya Dawson

    Annas Mix 3:

(32 min, very upbeat, only 80s bangers)

I consumed a lot of media as a child/teen that was made by women who were teens in the 80s and who would frequently mention 80s music and films that were important to them as teens. Because I have a need to get pop culture references I started watching and listening to a lot of stuff from the 80s and developed an obsession with collecting and watching 80s teen movies. A lot of the music from this mix is from those movies.

    “Faith” by George Michael

    “Shadow Dancing” by Andy Gibb

“Jessie’s Girl” by Rick Springfield

“Pretty in Pink” by Psychedelic Furs

“We are not alone” by Karla Devito
    “Heart of Glass” by Blondie

    “Shy Boy” by Bananarama

    “Kiss” by Prince

Annas Mix 4:

(19 min, pretty, romantic, a bit melancholic)

This is the first mix I am still proud of and like a lot. It used to be longer but I cut a few songs at some point that were not perfect enough for me when I was feeling perfectionist at some point.
As with the other early mixes almost all the songs are from movies and shows I love. Watching a lot of tv as a kid and teen was my main gateway to developing my own music taste and an interest for researching music history.

“I don’t mind” by Slumber Party

“Only Yesterday” by Taken by Trees

“These Days” by Nico

“Oh Yoko!” by John Lennon

“Ooh La La” by The Faces

    “I Will” by The Beatles

    Annas Mix 5:

(27 min, sad, but somewhat hopeful, mostly 70s)

This is one of my favorite mixes from back then. Also from when I was 13-14.

I had a 60s/70s wannabe hippie phase and would always wear a floor-length patchwork skirt and John Lennon sun glasses.
I had just watched Harold and Maude and The Graduate for the first time and through that learned of Cat Stevens and Simon and Garfunkel. Also my estranged father had sent me a couple of CDs as a gift to bond with me, one of them the White Album, which was my introduction to the Beatles.
“Trouble” was my favorite song for a long time and “Cry Baby Cry” is still my favorite Beatles song.

“Been Smoking too long” by Nick Drake

“Way Over Yonder” by Carol King

    “Trouble” by Cat Stevens

“If you want to Sing Out” by Cat Stevens

“Blackbird” by the Beatles

“Where Do the Children Play” by Cat Stevens

“April Come She Will” by Simon & Garfunkel

“Don’t be Shy” by Cat Stevens

  • My favorite movies about grief/losing someone

Last year there was a very sudden and tragic death in my family that changed the lives of me and my loved ones completely.
That’s also the reason why I haven’t really posted anything on here in a long time because I was too occupied with other things to have energy to put into my hobbies.
Because I am me, one of the first things I did to cope with the situation was to make this list.

    1. Aftersun (2022)
There is no explicit death in this movie, but the movie is a semi-autobiographical retelling about a vacation the filmmaker had with her father, before he later killed himself. You’re not being told what is really happening, but the depression, helplessness and anticipatory grief is always in the air. Even without knowing you can sense that something is wrong, something that you should be concerned about.
    2. Synecdoche, New York (2008)
The movie is about many things and kind of all over the place but in my opinion the most central themes are (fear of) death and grieving what is lost.
There is a deeply touching monologue at a funeral in it that is one of my favorite scenes ever.
    3. A Single Man (2009)
Visually incredibly stunning film. I first went into it thinking it was just a pretty period film set in the 60s and not knowing how devastatingly sad it is. So be warned! You will cry a lot.
It’s about a man who has lost all hope after losing his life partner and wandering around on a single day trying to cope with his grief. TW: suicide!
    4. The Virgin Suicides (1999)
One of my favorite movies. It captures the sadness and weight of being a young girl feeling lost in this world.
I watched it a lot when I was a teen and felt very seen by it.
As you can tell by the title it deals a lot with suicide and how the people being left after one happens deal with the grief.
Warning: there are a few very graphic scenes in it.
    5. The Holdovers (2023)
The movie is about 3 characters that I all relate to A LOT for various reasons. One of them is a grieving mother who has just lost her young son in war. The role is played by Da’Vine Joy Randolph whose acting in this is probably the best or at least my favorite I have seen related to grief.
    6. All of Us Strangers (2023)
The movie is about a very sad man played by my fav Andrew Scott who has lost both his parents when he was younger. He discovers that he can somehow magically travel back to his childhood home and spend time with his parents (now as an adult) and talk with them about all the trauma he had to endure as a child. It is one of the saddest movies I have ever seen and it has the most devastating ending I’ve probably ever seen. I was sobbing so hard. Be warned!
    7. C’mon c’mon (2021)
C’mon c’mon was made by Mike Mills during the time he split from his wife, mother of their child and fellow director Miranda July and you can really tell that he’s working through his own feelings and grief of the loss of his marriage via the movie.
It’s a about a man who has to take care of his little nephew while his sister goes away to take care of her mentally ill husband. There are really great scenes in it about feeling abandoned, confused, overwhelmed and struggling to feel and vocalize your own feelings. Really, really great film.
    8. Three Colours: Blue (1993)
The movie deals with a woman who has lost both her husband and her young daughter in an accident and who is going through different stages of grief and trying to find her way back into life after this great tragedy. It’s really profound and sad and beautiful.
    9. The Descendants (2011)
This one’s about a man who is in the midst of making the decision to sell a piece of land in Hawaii he has inherited when his wife has an accident and goes into a coma she will probably never wake up from. He has to deal with their 2 daughters who are both very distraught and with his own complex feelings towards his wife, who was having an affair before the accident happened. I didn’t think I would like the film very much before I first watched it but ended up being really touched and impressed by it.
    10. His Three Daughters (2023)
The movie is mostly set in the apartment of a man who has cancer and is going to die soon. His 3 daughters share the responsibility of caring for him at the end of his life and have to deal with the anticipatory grief and their difficult relationship dynamics with each other as sisters at the same time. Each sister deals with it differently. During almost all of the movie you never see the father, even though he is the central figure. You only feel his presence and hear his daughters talk about him, which I find really interesting.

    Honorable Mentions:

    Harold and Maude (1971)
    Magnolia (1999)
    Garden State (2004)
    Midsommar (2019)
    My Old Ass
 (2024)
    Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
    Hereditary (2018)
    Antichrist (2009)

PS: I intentionally left out Manchester by the Sea because I really dislike that movie.
